North Dakota Requirements for LBSW Licensure:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited college or university or a Canadian college or university accredited by Canadian Association for Social Work Education. The degree must be in social work as required by N.D.C.C. 43-41-04: Licenses - Law:  North Dakota State Law Chapter 43-41No other degree will be accepted.
  • Passing score on the ASWB Bachelor’s level exam.
  • Before 8/1/2019, this level was known as the LSW level and may still be reflected as such on some forms and information as we work to update them. 

Methods of Applying for LBSW Licensure:

Application for Initial Licensure

This method is for individuals who are not currently licensed in another state/jurisdiction. 

  1. A completed, signed application form. 

  2. An official transcript from the academic institution from which the degree was earned. 

  3. The applicant must successfully complete the ASWB Bachelor's level exam within one year from the date the application.

  4. A minimum of three written references providing evidence of the applicant meeting the requirements for professional conduct and competence. Applicants must submit:

    1. One reference from a social work faculty member, 

    2. One reference from a field placement supervisor, and 

    3. One reference from a licensed social worker. 

  5. Completion of a nationwide criminal history record check.

  6. Completion of child abuse and neglect background inquiry.

  7. Application fee of $25 and initial license fee of $75.

Application for Licensure by Reciprocity

This method is for individuals who are currently licensed as a social worker in another state/jurisdiction.  The requirements for licensure in the other state/jurisdiction must be similar to or more stringent than North Dakota requirements (see requirements listed above).
